Is this some newfangled method of authentication I've not heard about before

Something seems fishy to me. If the coin broke like the guy said it did, he could have replaced the image no problem. At least, I understand that sellers can edit sales.

I would hope he handles the other 4 coins with a lighter touch.

Hes like the person (we all prob know one) you don't trust to be careful so you never show them your stuff

...and I'm not letting him authenticate my coins either.

Makes me wonder about the one he snapped. I have had very brittle coins to break. I even had a very nice Caracalla drop on my carpet and broke in two. From the images, it looks right. Interesting way to auction off the coins for sure.

And yes. I know I think a couple of those guys I won't let near my collection.

That's funny because the same thing happened to me . I had this 100oz engelhard silver bar I was selling ....... I was holding it my hand and noticed that it was 2 grams too light. I dropped it on the floor and sure enough it split open......... ...........................

I saw this listing a week ago and I thought "what a @!X*for breaking that coin, even if it was an ancient forgery, at least in portraiture it had value".
