I am not by any means an expert on the Eisenhower dollar but a couple of weeks ago I had purchased a group of coins from a dealer that I have done business with before. Without checking my album I had agreed to purchase the reference coin, but when I received the coin it was a 1776 - 1976 S in the envelope that was clearly marked as a '75S Variety 1.

So I am confused about the this coin. Suffice it to say it is a fine looking coin and I am not about to complain because one can always use duplicates at a later point.

My question now is was there a coin that minted 1776 - 1976 that is or was cataloged as described? If so how would one determine it.

The only reason that I'm asking such a question is that there is a Jefferson coined in 1954 (?) with the reverse of 1955 that I asked about a couple weeks ago and it was determined that there was such a recognized variety. So I guess that I'm back asking about another variety.

Just to be clear about this, I don't feel like I was mislead because if it turns out that this is a mistake, I have no intention of returning what is a beautiful coin that can be used for barter purposes at a later time. I do hope that someone can help me with my quandry.

Sounds like you got the one minted for the 1975 mint sets. Easiest way for me to tell the difference between the two is the "R" in dollar on the reverse. The peg leg R is from 1975, sounds like thats the one you have type 1. The type 2 from 1976 has a curved R at the bottem.

Now that I have the reasoning and explanation I am still as satisfied as ever. My type I does have the peg leg on the reverse. Now that you've mention it, before I wrote this question up I was thinking about the idea that the coin was minted over two years. I was really confused and needed to have things explained to me succintly. As you get older you get confused. Which I was. As I said it was a beautiful coin and I still am determined to keep it.

I'm glad that I can still remember what I had for supper tonight.

Correct.

All Variety 1 Bicentennial Eisenhower dollars were minted in 1975. All 1975 mint and proof sets will have a Variety 1 dollar.
All Variety 2 Bicentennial Eisenhower dollars were minted in 1976. All 1976 mint and proof sets will have a Variety 2 dollar.

Also, all of the 40% silver Bicentennial Eisenhower dollars are Variety 1.

The some type II bicentennials were also struck in 1975 but you are correct that only the type I's were used in the 1975 mint and proof sets.
