I got this bit of joy from a lot of 4 large cents, bringing this one home effectively for $13.36 . The only noticeable PMD it has is on the reverse with "NI" in united, and one other gouge right above the ribbon within the wreath. Also, if you look at the stars on the obvserse, I was surprised to notice that there is some fairly faint original copper color on the 12th and 9th star tips going counterclockwise from the date, as well as a very small dab of liberty's hair, where the 9th stars' tip is pointing at. I'm not an expert on large cents, but I'm beginning to start a "budget" collection as you can see, and this is the most valuable date I've received as of yet. I deemed the slight damage acceptable, since as I understand, it is more acceptable on coins of this age, am I correct? Anyways, even if you guys don't think I did just right on this coin, I'm still happy with it either way, so don't hesitate to blast me on a bad purchase!

Lastly, that 2 is so curly! Is it supposed to be like that? Looks like I didn't do all my research first!

$13.36 for the Key Date of the series?

Snerk. Beer's on you tonight.

Oh:

Edit: Getting to say stuff like this beats the livin' tar out of telling someone they just threw away their money. Derek, you want to hope you always get a deal like this one.

Wow, 1821 large cent had only 389K minted? I had no idea I was buying such a key! I also got a 1845, 1848, and 1855. The '45 and '48 also have gouges, but the '55 only has an ugly scratch on the last 5, and I believe is good condition. I'm starting to believe that $53.44 was a pretty good deal!

Let's just say, the rest of the coins were essentially free. Derek, you've nabbed the key to the series. The rest of that series - 1816-1839 Coronet - isn't awfully difficult in that grade range. You should seriously consider it a focus, if that's the type of collecting you're into.

I got a story to share:) My dad paid 2 dollars for a large cent. It was a no-date. So I cleaned the coin with cotton. The next thing I know, I saw: 1825

the 21 is a better date but the 23 is considered the key.
