The host coin appears to be genuine but the edge reeding certainly is not. Most likely, someone scored the edge to pass it off as a quarter when the extra five cents actually had purchasing power. How much did you pay for it?

The reeding is obviously added, as 20 cent pieces were smooth-edged; however, I can't get a close enough look at the strike with these images. Could you post some that are a bit bigger?
EDIT: Hehe got beat to the first response, which reminds me: Where are my manners? Welcome to CCF! :-)

thx for the welcome, I paid around 120 for it, and that was the main reason I posted it cause I've never seen them with the reeding on the edges before. do you think that totally devalues the coin?

Yes the defacing of the rim does devalue it. It may look good in an album to hide the issue.

@ryanklaus - Gotcha. :-) Also aye, the reeding would count as damage and knock its value down significantly.
I would have paid a premium for it, myself, but I *collect* counterfeit and altered coins. :-)

Personally I'd return it. It's heavily damaged and carries a significantly reduced value as a result. Save your money for buying a problem free example for a few more bucks.

Thanks for the info guys, but any speculation of the value with the damage? so I can decide if I should return or hold onto it for my collection.

As a guess, I'd say it's worth no more than $75. A dealer might pay you less than that. It's a very common coin and easy to find without being mangled like that.

The real problem with trying to value a problem coin is value is determined by the buyer. For a no problem coin, at any one time, let's say there are 2000 people in the market for it. So the value can be determined as an average.
A problem coin has, let's say, 20 people in the market for it. So the value is essentially determined by the one person you find that is interested in it.
I mean no insult to anyone's collecting tastes, but I know it's another example where I would rather have a much lower grade coin without problems if it were a matter of finances for me. (Which it often is. :-) )
I'd return it if at all possible. Just my 2 cents though.

linxlvr explained it well!!...If its odd coins you're after ,,this one is great,,However it's not a valid example of an orig. Twenty Cent Piece....SHAME this coin was altered ,,as its condition is sweet!....NO value to me....IMHO

Indeed there is no accounting for "taste"... but if you *do* return it, though I wouldn't mind knowing where it went.... heh... :-)

First, to the forum! A suggestion to ryanklaus, if you do return it (be sure to explain exactly why) you could also inform the seller in your message to him that you know someone, Steve, would be interested in possibly acquiring it. In this way the seller won't think he will be stuck with a problem coin and he and Steve could possibly work out a mutually satisfactory deal so everyone is happy. Just saying and if I am being a bit presumptuous then please accept my sincere apologies. Ed ANA LM-3175

As a damaged 20 cent piece it's a shame, as a potentially contemporary alteration to try and pass it as a quarter it is quite interesting.
