I know the image of Elizabeth II has changed a few times, but was wondering if any of the other monarchs had different images? (or any other changes such as George VI having mention of India removed in 1948)

I believe Victoria had 2 different images for the penny (no crown in 1858/1859, and with crown for 1876-1901), but my searching around has led me to believe there was only one image for each of her other coins (no crown for 5c, 10c, and 20c, crown for 25c, 50c, and 1.00).

The main reason I'm curious is that my first collecting goal is one of each "unique" Canadian coin (combination of obverse and reverse). For example for the penny:
1858-1859 (Victoria no crown, and 'one cent')
1876-1901 (Victoria with crown, and 'one cent')
1902-1910 (Edward VII, and 'one cent')
1911-1920 (George V, and 'one cent')
1920-1936 (George V, and maple leaves with 'one cent')
1937-1947 (George VI, and maple leaves plus mention of India)
1948-1952 (George VI, and maple leaves no mention of India)
1953-1964 (Elizabeth II image 1, and maple leaves)
1965-1966 / 1968-1981 (Elizabeth II image 2, and maple leaves)
1967 (Elizabeth II image 1, and rock dove)
1982-1989 (Elizabeth II image 2, maple leaves, and 12-sided)
1990-1991 / 1993-1996 (Elizabeth II image 3, maple leaves, and 12-sided)
1992 (Elizabeth II image 3, maple leaves, Canada 125th)
1997-2001 (Elizabeth II image 3, and maple leaves)
2002 (Elizabeth II image 3, maple leaves, 50th Jubilee)
2003-2012 (Elizabeth II image 4, and maple leaves)

Any help would be appreciated :)

Cheers!

Only you can define the parameters of your collection.
There are large leaf and small leaf Victorian reverses.
1911"godless" reverse.
1947 maple leaf date.
etc. etc.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Thanks for the advice DBM :)

I had forgotten about the "godless" reverse! I know I don't want to include differences like large date versus small date, or hanging digits, etc. But intentionally changed (by the mint) images for the monarchs, different text, or intentionally different reverses are all fair game.

I spent another couple evenings researching some more and feel I have a pretty solid list now to go by; and thus where to put coins in the album so they are in their "correct" slots and don't have to do major rearranging later LOL

The Victorian Cents 1876-1901 had 5 different portraits. 1, 1a, 2, 3, 4. I'm not sure this is what you are looking for but it is well documented.

Not to mention the hybrid obverses as well... 1a/1 and 2/1 and the three reverse types.

Wow thanks nybird and SPP-Ottawa! I had no idea there were differences in the Victorian cents (aside from no crown versus with crown). I must admit though, I stared at the pictures at that site for 15min and still couldn't really see a difference :( The different leaf sizes were more visible to me so I will probably try to get those different ones.

Cheers!

This should help with the obverse types. Dan is also a CCF member as well...

That's great! Thanks SPP-Ottawa (and to Dan for making the site!).

Now that I have seen it, I have no idea how I didn't at least notice the jowl in Obverse 3 - it seems so obvious now.
