I found two types of ring (wide and narrow) in 1996 specimen toonie (from the blue folder) as the pics. Can we call it variety? Or, it just normal? Thanks!

How are you HJ Nong?

Both are from the blue folder? If so, this is "just" a packaging error - the wide ring is a proof strike, not a specimen strike.

Both, the proof and the specimen were struck and packaged in Ottawa, together with a large number of different presentations, an error could of this type could occur.

Nice find!

Both of these coins look like specimen finishes to me.

Thanks everyone!

Yes, both of them came from those "Blue folders". They are SPECIMEN finished.

The proof strike is like this:

Here are my three 1996 specimens. the first two are in folders like you have pictured and the third is in the folder that contains the banknote too.

They all appear to have the wide ring.

Hmm, interesting. The mint doesn't use different planchets for the SP, PR, and Circulation coinage do they? 'Cause otherwise it could have been struck on a circulation planchet...

This post is not going to make me popular.

Seems to me that you have to read a bit more about the differences between "finish" and "strike". You also need to familiarize yourselfs with the 4 different strikes of Canadian coinage, how dies and planchets are treated and prepared for each strike. Finally you need to read the catalog and learn what coins were put in what packages.

t_y, go back and reread your original reply. I think you meant proof-like strike, and not proof? There is no way either coin in that first post is a proof strike, none of the devices have the ultra heavy cameo.

Proof like weren't done in 1996. MS, SP, PR are the only three types in 96 or so I thought.?

Neither the 1996 average proof (struck in base metals)

There is NO PL in 1996, only proof, specimen and business strike.

That coin is a proof, I have no doubt about it. I have more than 10 of those here at home to show you and at least 10 more specimen to compare.

There would be the business strike and the uncirculated strike, specimen and proof.

So, you have proof struck coins, dated after 1980, without _any_ frosting on the devices?

I repeat: only proof, specimen and business strike

The blue folder states "uncirculated" but the coin is a specimen.

I collect twoonies. All my other coins serve the single function of trade bait - I don't look at them, don't study them and have only a marginal interest on them

If the wide ring is a proof and a narrow ring is a specimen, doesn't it seem unlikely that my three would be of the wide ring variety?

The last photo I have included is from the $2 regular banknote (not BRX) and $ RCM set, which the Charlton catalog indicates is specimen.

The first two are in the smae folder as hjnong has pictured.
