Auction ended lastnight. Did I make a mistake not purchasing this one? I do not like coins in these holders but this one looks to me like it is an MS 62, and then it has the E clash on the reverse, what do you guys think this one grades and should I have purchased it? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1886-O-Morg...em27cf2e23af

I personally think you did well to back off this one at that price If it is in a NNC holder, you can almost be guaranteed that it is over graded. The obverse could be MS, but IMHO reverse is AU. Which would drop the price under the $800 price point.

Probably AU58 at best. I don't believe it would cross to MS at one of the real three. It would be a huge risk purchasing a semi key in one of those basement slabs and besides,if it were worth it someone would have purchased it.

I wouldn't have pulled the trigger on this one either. You can guarantee that the basement slabs are without a doubt over graded.

buying a coin slabbed by NNC is like buying a Shrimp Sandwich from the deli next to the Gowanus Canal...it's just not worth the pain....

Stick with the Top III (for U.S. coins) and you will do well!

What's really strange about this seller is they have sold many NNC 1886-O graded MS62. None of these coins show up as completed sales from centless. Could these sellers be one in the same?

This is very much a borderline issue. Consider: E clashes are by a wide margin the hottest thing in VAMming, and you can expect high demand going forward. This is one of the hottest among them due to the strength of the clash.
That said, they're not uncommon at 55 and below. If this one slabs at AU58, it's worth every penny (and in MS you can pretty much set your own price), but the price drop to 55 is huge. The seller would have easily gotten his price had he drawn attention to the variety.
But no, I wouldn't have bought it either. And agonized about my decision for the rest of time.

I will risk going against the consensus, and say I think it was a fair price.
I was surprised to see that it wasn't graded as MS67+ DMPL( :P ), but IMO, this one is AU58, and might make MS.
Might be foolish, but I really like this coin.

MS-62 is not a stretch for this coin - very little wear evident and good luster. AU-58 at worst
