This came with another in a lot I bought a week ago.
It is an AE.

From the hairstyle, the Augusta seems to be Julia Domna.
The letters I can see are "...DAD..."
I do not think it is a rare ancient medal from Julia's dad.

The reverse is either a column or a staff or?
There are letters as well around, but I do not know the orientation the reverse should be.

I've looked through Sear's for a possible match, so far to no avail.

It weighs 3.75 grams and is 20 x 19 x 2.2 mm in diametre.

This is Serdica by Julia Domna. The link below shows a different reverse type but gives the general idea.

I would really like to get an AE with such a monument on the reverse, alas for this, it is not a column

Thank you chrsmat71 you tried your best to make sense of what is a blur of letters, see the link Doug has kindly given, even there the obverse legend slightly better in clarity.

And so thank you Doug for the link, it is of great help.
So the reverse legend must be the Greek name of Serdica (Serdon). The reverse of my example may be a variant of the example in the link, with my one having a snake coil up a lit altar.

I wonder if the obverse really is in Latin, since the reverse is using the Greek "Delta". And so instead of "..DAD..." it may be "...ODeltaO..".

Looking at the obverse letters with an Eye Loupe, I could see an "I" at the beginning and what looks like an "M" squashed towards to top.
So it may be "IO DOM" i.e. Julia Dom(na).
As to the remainder on the right hand side, I must figure out what can be seen on the acsearch example, as mine is illegible.

For reference, it seems Moushmov would have the answer.

Thank you once again!

Looking further, I have come across Dane Kurth's excellent online translation of Moushmov's catalogue of Serdica:
http://archive.org/details/Ruzicka_..._English_528

# 92 has the obverse legend "IO DOM-SEBAS" which seems a match for the obverse legend of my example. Only the reverse is different with having an oak wreath, rather than a snake and altar.

I believe, as I said, that the OP coin is a different reverse than the acsearch link. It does appear to be a column with decorations but I would not be shocked that it is not in Mouchmov or other literature. I have no idea where Venus came into this question? There is no snake. I own a Caracalla of completely different reverse with the same reverse legend and an extremely abbreviated obverse legend (AVTKMANTO) so IODOM seems like a way Serdica might have done it.

The number of one assarion coins shown in online references is quite small. I suspect there are many unlisted types. This could be one of a kind or it could be common but no one so far has cared to try to develop a complete list. Tiny bronzes get so little respect.

Hello Doug,
Yes, it shows us how much more there remains to be catalogued regarding these types of coin.

Seeing the Severan AE's of Serdica, I noticed how the snake featured quite often on the reverses.
So I thought I was seeing one on the reverse of mine.
But I may be wanting to see, rather than actually seeing what is there.
