Evening all , Just after your expert opinions on a coin(?) that was found in Mold (N. Wales) - Not the fungus! Got no other information about it, so thought I'd go to the experts! Looks to be very rough cast bronze, but could be totally wrong - So if you've got any opinions, please feel free to comment. It would be good to know what it is... Thanks Simon114

Perhaps c.160BC? If there are minor type marks they will have to await someone seeing the photos with more clear eyes. Don't ask how a coin of that period got to Wales.

to the community Very interesting find, especially that early of a Roman coin being found in that area.

Could have been brought there by a Celt.

You need to get that to your local museum - thats a really old coin. The oldest coin was a republican that was found in a hoard. Perhaps the British museum might want it!
What other coins do you get from the area?

All, thanks very much for the responses - I got the coin from my partners sister and she found it when walking her dog. I am truly amazed that this is such an exciting coin. I live in Liverpool so I'll give the museum a ring tomorrow and see how I proceed with getting the coin to them to look at.
I'll provide updates from there... So watch this space - The saga continues! :-)

If it was a surface find rather than a metal detectorist, I'd have to consider it was dropped recently by a person carrying it (pocket piece or running away after breaking into a house and stealing it?). It has some polish so I doubt it was first brought to light recently but came from a collection.

In 2004 when we got burgled, the thief escaped from the bedroom window, but not before taking a small ceramic bowl by the window, which only had a few old foriegn coins in, such as French Francs. We found the bowl nearby a few days later. So I can understand the supposition of this AE Republican As being on the surface as a result of a house break in, then dropping it as he/she could make no sense of its value.
