I recently bought this medal and whilst it has oxidation, age and a few edge bruises I am looking to find out if it's real. The has been some discussion on another forum and the obvious fakes on e-bay are easy to spot.

Buchannon-1857-Peace-Medal

Decribed as bronze 76mm diameter.

Medal arrived today and sent off to NGC. More scans and it is very heavy....approx half a pound.

I had the same medal as that many years ago and it was also in bronze. The true or 'most important' Peace Medals were all made of silver. Other than a few visible rim nicks in your pics, it's looks to be in great shape.

Is the dia ~ 2.75 or 3" across. I'm going on memory here as any pics that I have would be pre-digital and also boxed and buried somewhere?

I've got a peace medal book buried somewhere and I'll try to find which box I stashed that book in.

My bronze example was held on a large (wolf)toothed necklace under glass and with the same Buchanan medal recessed into a red material background.

Many extra Peace Medals (bronze examples) were made in the 1800's to be given out to different native leaders "as needed".
When you get away from the silver peace medals, I've been told that it gets a little sketchy as to how authentic the bronze Peace Medals are. ...and that should be reflected in the selling price.
