Not my area of expertise but it has "medal" orientation not coin.

The reverse seems to be the same as 1 vereinsthaler German State Hesse Darmstadt http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces15925.html

Ludwig II was king of Bavaria which became part of the German Empire in 1871 so maybe its a commemorative medal for this event ?

Well, it's modelled after the German thalers of the mid 19th century - but it's some sort or medal. It actually seems quite crude so I assume it's not silver.
