Hi Forum Members and Visitors,

I would like to get any information on the 2005-D speared Buffalo nickel. I have seen a few pictures of the coin on ebay, but no real clear photos and I think some of the sellers are putting out misinformation on the coin in order to sell. If anyone has a clear photo of a true speared buffalo and is able to post it, I would be most appreciative.

Further, what is the current value of a bu speared buffalo? What are the 2005-d rolls worth? I understand the many things that may dictate the value, but any ballpark estimates from my CCF members who I do trust, would be great. I hesitate to buy raw coins off of ebay after all the horror stories you hear about from a lot of people who purchased off of ebay.

I have the speared Bison and it's an awesome error. No time for photos right now, sorry.

You WILL NOT find any speared bisons in rolls bought from ebay. All of those rolls were located early on.

The price is not firm on this error, it is very fluid. Check ebay auctions for the current value.

Alas this isn't mine. But it's a good example as goes my understanding of the error.

Just be careful that you do not mistake the speared buffalo from the wounded buffalo. There are a lot of people who will try to pass the wounded buffalo for a speared buffalo. The difference being, the die crack will be more towards the back and going through the rump. A true speared buffalo is like the one shown above

Tim, I've held on to several wounded buffalos. Are they worth any more than face value?

The Wounded Bison is too an Awesome error. It is a huge retained die crack with great eye appeal. Worth around 10 dollars, but I think it is undervalued for how nice an error it is.

Here is the Wounded Bison

PS the Speared Bison is from a different mint and is a Huge Die Gouge and a lot rarer.

Thanks to you folks who responded to my questions.. As usual, good information. The guy was selling a "poor man's version" of the wounded buffalo...I was not familiar with the coin, but it interested me and wanted to find out more in case I decide to bid on one. Thanks again,

Poorman's bison sounds good to me, I'll have to get one. I just opened a roll of bison's and found 1 coin in the roll with a darkened color to it. It does seem to have some shine but looks a little dirty and does stand out as darker from all the others. Any idea what that might be?
