Well here goes another new direction! I bought a 50 cent fractional currency note, series of 1875. It has a picture of William H. Crawford on the obverse. He was Secretary Treasurer from 1817-1825. The back is covered with text stating the laws inacted during the Civil War( 3-3-1863 and 6-30-1864) allowing for the production of the note. It was made in Philadelphia by Jos. R. Carpenter. It says it is "exchangeable" for U.S notes not to exceed $3.00, unless for "customs" then it can be exchanged for up to $5.00. I will post pictures down the road a bit. It is "fancier" looking than most of our modern currency![:0]LOL Mike

I just purchased my first fractional as well. It is a 10 cent note and hasn't arrived as yet. The note did have part of the right corner missing but I like personality and the note is for my little guy. I want him to be able to see and hold the beauty of the past and purchasing a few items will be the best way to get it done now!

I just purchased a handful of truly worn fractional notes for the kids attending the CoinFest. These will never be the highlight of any collection, but offer a ton of history.
Mike, I love the way that you think about your collection. Directions are meant to be changed. That is the only way to see what is out there.

ND, there is a big numismatic world out there and I learned a ton just from that little 50 cent note. Look how much information was on just this particular one! This one note now has me reading and looking at additional notes and I'm stunned at the enormous variety out there. This is going to be fun. I have continued my foray into Colonials and now own 13 different pieces! That is another area that has pushed my "need" for knowledge back a few hundred more years!! I bought some "cobb" coinage and.......Oh well you know! [:p][:p]There go those gears again!!!!!Mike

I have some Canadian fractional notes, all in tattered condition as I remember.

Later this week, when things slow down for me, I'll have to dig them out and see what I have.

I really enjoy paper notes, it's just I don't have the finances to collect both coins and paper. Wish I did.

I am not really a currency guy but there has been more than one of those type of notes that has almost made me open up my wallet and start yet another direction in my collecting. Would love to see pics!

It really isn't surpriseing I guess that people have these in there collections. They did replace coins during that War, just like steel pennies replaced copper during that War. Honest Abe just ment them to be a paper coins to replace metal coins, because he needed the metal.
