I really don't think this is a stain. I believe it's a Woody style alloy mixture problem. The reverse reminds me of a camouflage pattern. What ever she is, she looks kind of cool.

I just now noticed this. Look at the wheat stalk on the top right side. It looks like a partial doubled image. Does anybody else see this?

Yes I see that now... that leads me to believe it is a washing or staining of some sort.

Is there any actual doubling on the coin?

Dave, I don't remember seeing any doubling but the coin is on the work bench waiting for a 2x2. I can check it tonight. This portion of mirrored image on the right stalk is from the outer side of the stalk, If you notice the top of the stalk from the center is wider on the outside than on the inside. I have no idea how this image could be transferred. If another coin laid on top reverse to reverse I don't see how this could happen . Very bizarre.

Whatever the extra wheat stalk discoloration is, it doesn't appear to be raised, and the left side of the discoloration doesn't appear to be curved like the actual stalk. I agree that the "ghost" is most likely just discoloration/staining/toning, possible from another coin that was laying on this one? I have an IHC that looks like it is camoflaged. I'll post a picture of it tomorrow night when I get home from work.

Environmental damage (exposure to some chemical or environmental substance) on a woody

Thanks for the replies. My guess it would have been chemical fumes that created the ghost image along with the Port Wine stains.

Here's the IHC I mentioned... what do you think caused the camoflaged appearance?

rachums107, I've dug a lot of IHC and never pulled one out of the ground that looked that good. You may want to photograph the coin out of the holder.

Alright, I'll take another pic out of the holder and get it posted. It is really in good shape, so not sure of it having ever been buried...
