I am new to this forum - hello! Many years ago someone gave me an 1826, classic head, smooth rim half penny coin. From what I've read online it is a Cohen-2. It looks to me like it is in fairly good condition - every thing on it is readily readable.

I am a novice at this. I only have a handful of coins and little to no knowledge.

Can you give me a ballpark idea of what this half penny coin might be worth?

Thank you!

Stay a while. We need pictures. Nobody (that I know of) is a mind reader. Pictures are needed. Thanks and welcome again.

That worked very well!

That is a very nice 1/2 cent. Since you are looking for a value, I will not comment this time around.

Welcome to CCF, Basheva. Nice pics.

There are only two Cohen varieties for 1826. Yours is definitely C-2 - the location of the leaf under the S in STATES is definitive. It's far less common than C-1. The technical grade is probably VF-35, but the gouges on the obverse (postmint damage - PMD) detract from the value.

It's quite difficult to establish a value for C-2's because they rarely reach the market. That's a good thing, but it's balanced out by a relative lack of demand. I'd guess the value of this coin to be in the neighborhood of $100.
