The more I look at this one, the more I am torn if it has been cleaned/tampered with. Would PGS or others grade it, or would it come back "details"? Or worse yet, fake? As always, thanks for the generous sharing of knowledge.

Can't say on the cleaning, but very dark for a seated .20.

yeah dude if you're not sure and are in the market for such a piece, just buy a PCGS slabbed XF example. The third party grading services, particularly PCGS are very harsh and critical of coins. So a jaw dropping coin that you may like may turn out to be "whizzed", "smoothed" or have some other issue. If you buy one slabbed, you will have a piece that has passed even the toughest standards. In my opinion, the coin in question may or may not be considered problem-free (it's very difficult to tell without examining it in person), and looks like it has some woodgrain effect, and has no better than VF details.

Personally, I like it! It would fit nicely into an album.

But if you want a slabbed coin, buy a slabbed coin and you won't have to worry about coming back with a "details" grade. Trust me on this, I have learned the HARD way!.

...and it has a 14 day return policy...just in case.

...and a lot of nice coins!

Looks like a nice original coin that I think would slab problem free. Grade looks close to EF-40 but the weakness in the shield might hold it back to a VF-35. A slabbed EF-40 can probably be had at auction for around $180-200.

I like the coin but think it's overgraded and overpriced. The deadly duo.

Nice catch guys...the price! Too steep for a questionable coin. For a little bit more ($285), there is a nice looking XF40 PCGS on sale. Stick with the TOP III Third Party Graders.

Thamks all- I took a quick trip to the PGS photo grade, and now that you mention it, there is some weakness in the shield. I need to bone up on "tooling" and "smoothing" Its when "ya don't know what ya don't know" you get killed.

Aside from the dings in the field I think the coin is fine.
