Here's the ebay listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1884-Morgan...em4ac0b77d27My counterfeit senses are tingling, but due to the poor photos, I need a second opinion before I up and report it (but time is slim). Problems: - Mushy detail throughout. - Denticles are reduced to "dots" from 1 o'clock to 5 o'clock on the obverse. - Seems to suffer from a poorly punched planchet (common in off-metal fakes) where the obverse edge is too sharp, and the reverse edge is too smooth. Thoughts?

I'm not familiar with the crosslet "4" variety?

I thought it was just a bad photograph, but you're absolutely right, the 4 looks completely wrong.
Serves me right for being sleepy. :-)
EDIT: Reported for the fakety fake it is.

Definitely a fake. All the devices look wrong. Look at the base of each letter, they are much thicker then they are on an authentic coin. And as Dave mentioned, the crosslet 4. Here is the coin in question, compared to an authentic 1884-CC

Sleepy? Heck, I was just adding one more detail to concur with what you already listed. It's all wrong.

The second I saw the obverse, I thought fake. The details are very mushy.

Ya think the 1921-only reverse might be a hint?

I can't quite put my finger on it. *Yawwwn...* Need coffee... Blast! This is bugging me." And when you mentioned the 4, it was one of those dawning moments: "Duh! Yep. No doubt." The detail that did it was hiding in plain sight. :-)

Quote: Ya think the 1921-only reverse might be a hint? And the obverse nose line says 1921, also.

The mint mark is too large. The CC's on my 1884 are half the size of the CC's on this coin. In Dave Bowers' Red Book of Morgan dollars he states that the strike characteristics for the 1884-CC is average to above average and the strike on this dollar is definitely below average. The seller has 36 total feedback since December 2003, two in the last month and two in the last six months equaling the four total in the last 12 months. There's a chance he doesn't even know his coin is no good. Ed ANA LM-3175

Looks like there is another bidder on the coin. Up to $102.50.

Ouch... Looks like someone's gonna be pretty unhappy when they receive it.. Unless they don't even notice as they haven't yet... Uugh... Too bad...

I sent an e-mail to the seller to let him know his coin is counterfeit. He replied he was not aware. Let's see what happens...

Now the listing says, "This listing was ended by the seller because the item was sold." I suppose that means the seller pulled the item.

This is the response I got after informing the seller that this coin is a counterfeit. The seller was not aware. Quote: Thank you very much. I will be ending the auction and refunding any money that's paid forward to me. Greatly appreciated,Jason
