1799 Dollar The item number is 130841916082I asked the seller to check the edge for reeding and the coin has the reeding and not letters. He then updated the listing with a photo of the edge of the coin. Do genuine coins with reeding exist? I do not think so. Prove me wrong. Seller appears to be responsive to questioning.

Known counterfeit. From a DBD counterfeit archive site: Quote:The above 1799 fake is the most frequently seen counterfeit Bust dollar on ebay and in the numismatic marketplace as a whole. It's so badly styled that you would think that nobody would be fooled, but people regularly are. Liberty's face, rather than sporting a placid smile, is scowling. Her breast is grossly elongated. The reverse is totally lacking in central detail, including the motto. The coin has a reeded rather than lettered edge. This type originated in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Large numbers were brought back to the U.S. by returning service personnel. More recently, the same type was produced in the Persian Gulf and brought back by service personnel returning from the Gulf War. The coin consists of copper alloyed with small amounts of nickel and zinc. Unlike most of the counterfeits pictured here, this one is slightly overweight. One specimen I've seen from the Vietnam era weighs 30.3g, another slightly thicker one from the Gulf War era weighs 31.3g. Here's the website, to see the accompanying pic. http://drapedbustcoins.reidgold.com/page_7.htmlThe one on ebay now seems to have had the most comically fake feature of this coin, the chicken-like eagle, deliberately rubbed off.

Chicken-like eagle? Perfect description! I have both a genuine and a fake example and the heads and mouth are very different.
I sent this topic link to the seller for study. Perhaps he/she will reconsider.

The seller was nice enough to add this:
"Since posting this item, I discovered that most Bust Dollars are engraved on the edge. This one is reeded only and I have added a photo showing it. This may not be the real thing and it is for sale as you see it. "
I doubt he knew it was fake.

Does the seller know that the listing of counterfeits is against ebay rules, even if they're being sold "as you see it?"

Check out the Q&A for this item. Seller indicated that all of the research he has done indicated that Bust dollars do NOT have lettered edges! Personally, I think he knows it's not genuine and offers no refund unless buyer can prove it's a fake.

Well, the choice is going to be out of his hands rather soon.

For those who missed it, here are the photos: And after my initial contact with the seller: Had I not been studying this date for the last month I would not have noticed that something was "off." It is gone now, and that is all that matters.

The listing is gone, gone, gone ("yonder comes the sucker and he's got my gal, and she's gone gone gone, and she's gone gone gone, and I bid her my last farewell" I've seen several fakes on ebay that feature odd wear in the form of a flat spot right where "copy" would have been punched. The study of counterfeits is a lot of fun.

I do have have the credentials to report a fake to ebay, which is why I brought it to everyone's attention. Together, we are a most formidable force. For the record, the seller's id is: martiwf0 Description:

I would think that if he knew it was fake, he would try to avoid sending pictures of the main detail that proves it's fake. Not everyone knows how to tell if a coin is fake, many are flabbergasted that fake coins even exist.

Oh jeez, these are *all over* the bloody place... If I had a dime for every one I've seen I could probably buy a genuine piece outright.
