I have watched the thread concerning a lower tier third party grading company, and there was a post made "is there no room in the hobby for them", and some were quick to say NO.
While I will not say that this company is "good" or their services "good" there is room in this hobby for everyone. Coin grading is one of the most controversial topics in this hobby. Don't fool yourself into believing that the top four companies are perfect. They ALL overgrade and undergrade. They all use special rules to apply to the few and they all are businesses. They are in this hobby to make a dollar. Simple as that.
There are many dealers who believe that online auctions have NO place in the hobby. This is also not true. There are collectors who think that dealers have NO place in the hobby.
Worst of all, there are people who think that there is no room left in this hobby for anyone else.

Change is always a good thing. It forces others to improve and expand.

Take me for an example. I very rarely sell any coins to collectors. I don't run big ads in the numismatic papers. I do not buy or sell in online auctions. Is there NO room for me in this hobby?

Coins do not care who owns them. As a matter of fact, these little discs of metal will outsurvive all of us. We are simply caretakers while we are here.
If a company is not serving the community, DO NOT do business with them. Am I the only one that understands this? There are too many options available to us in this hobby to be limited to only the bad. It simply boggles my mind that "we" spend so much time and energy on this same topic. When was the last time anyone started a thread on the "good" things that this hobby offers?
Where are the threads about good dealers? Good sellers? Good buyers? Good grading companies? Good designs? Good forums? Good information?

You have to take into consideration that if "we" would spend our time promoting the "good" others would learn from this and make that knowledge work to their favor. This hobby is far from perfect, but there are a few out there who are looking for ways to make it better. Do not let yourself be quick to judge.

Most important of all, do not close the door on anyone. You never know who will be the next person to take our hobby into the future.

There's tons of room in the hobby for everyone. I can't say much for third party grading because it's not in my sphere of interest or experience as I buy all my coins raw.

But as for is there enough room for collectors? Why i'd say there's never enough collectors. I know this to be true because I've collected coins of certain eras before and I've never met anyone doing the same thing as myself.

When I was wandering a coin fair yesterday I was bowled over by the plethora of ancients available, nearly every table had them! I though Jeeze there's never gonna be enough people for that lot, alot of those coins will take a while to sell.

As for good dealers and good companies. I met several over the years and dealers I would and have recommended too.

Someone asked me a few months ago where would be a good source of German coins I pointed them straight to Ron Guth.

If anyone wants English/British I usually direct them to Andy Bruce, Chris Perkins or Ron Fyfe all good dealers. And there's a few others too.

I also send alot of people requesting info on English coins to Tony Clayton's 'Coins of the UK'.

Infact come to think of it I usually promote good dealers and businesses far more than I ever slate any specific of the same, which I've probably only done once or twice and with good reason.

ND
On this forum and on the Australian Forum, I have seen numerous post about the good and the positive.
These are the ones I look for. Always nice to be warned, but the more we can do to spread the good news about other people especially forum members, the better.

Even in each of your post, I learn a little about you, guess that's why I like ya.

Side note when in college we came up with the iea of a GOOD NEWS newspaper, it was published nationally- only had good news colleced from everywhere we could get it. Not acciednts, no murders, no roberies, nothing negative.

Even with a national distribution, we could not get people to buy it.
they wanted the blood and guts- As they say in the news bussiness if it bleeds - it leads.

So I'm with you mate lets start promoting the good.
The good dealers, the good coins, the good members and the good experiences.
This hobby is still in its' infancy.
Keep up the good work

I know I was wondering about that point too. Coins have been collected almost as long as they've been minted.

What you see is what you get:
Passionate for sure. A little knowledgeable. Borderline compulsive. Shallow as a teaspoon. Sometimes an enigma.
I guess that I can be best described like the the old saying, "I can't see the forest because of the trees". I am only as complicated as people make me out to be

My reference to infancy is not the length of time of the hobby but the maturity of it.
I believe we still have a long way to go as far as relationships between: The mints, The Laws, Customs agents, Taxes, Dealers, Collectors and most of all the internet.

While many have focused on the negative areas of our hobby, the positives certainly outweigh them. There is so much to be learned and appreciated through numismatics (art, history, commerce, economy, metallurgy) and the list goes on and on. And we also have the ability to communicate with and get to know fellow collectors from all over the world. Many coins that could not be obtained before are now available thanks to the web. Our hobby has come a long way and still has a long way to go!
