I went on the mint website and found this..Is there a consiprancy ?
I found this on the mint website ...will the real buffalo please stand up.

66. Black Diamond was not a “model” model!... Legend has it that James Fraser picked Black Diamond, a buffalo who lived in New York’s Central Park Zoo, as the model for the nickel he was designing. You’d think BD would be honored, but he refused to pose! He kept turning to watch Fraser draw instead of standing sideways. Fraser had to get a zookeeper to catch the animal’s eye while Fraser snuck around for a side view

Now this goes against the common thought. According to most, the Buffalo used was Black Diamond on display in the Bronx Zoo through the early 1900's.

Like you, I had always been told that the Buffalo used for the original Indian Head nickel was known as "Black Diamond" and had been a zoo animal until death in the early 1900's.

Correct me if I'mwrong , but the treasury dept, does not pick the models for coins, but picks art work designed by artists specifically for coins?

True. In the days of old, the Mint engraver had a pretty wide path to create new designs. Often there would be "competitions" but usually only 1 to 3 artists/sculptors invited to compete. If there were a design from an outside source, the engraver still had some "wiggle" room.
