This coin is right at the very end of what Sear has nominally called the end of late Roman coinage. He nominated that the end was marked by a change in the bronze coinage, but the gold coinage continued to evolve, not change.
Decades ago, I made a special trip from Manchester, to the Coins and Medals Department of the British Museum.
I had written to them about a month before, stating what I was specifically interested in.
On arrival, I was ushered into a large study room, through a very substantial safe door.
I sat down for the next two hours, and looked at tray after tray of late Roman and Byzantine gold coins, all in pristine condition.
One of the more memorable days in my numismatic life, and for those two hours I was just about as happy as a pig in mud!
These days, I have a few examples of gold of this era, but they are nowhere as pristine at those museum exhibits!
