I was under the impression that 71-76 were 40% silver. Now I have seen posting (not here) that they are copper and nickel. What is the real deal?

They have to have an "S" mint mark. But not all S mint marked Ikes are 40% silver. You will have to weigh them to know for sure. 22.68 grams for the clad & 24.59 grams for the 40%.

Only the special editions in the blue box (uncirculated) and the brown box (proof) were silver. The mint sets and the proof sets werenot.

Here is the run down.

Except for a few very rare errors:

ALL business strike quality S mint Ikes are 40% silver

ALL proof 1971 and 1972 Ikes are 40% silver

SOME proof 1973, 74, and 76 Type I Ikes are 40% silver.

SOME proof 73,74, and 76 Type I Ikes are coppernickel clad

ALL proof 1976 Type II, 1977 and 78 Ikes are copper nickel clad

ALL P and D business strikes are copper nickel clad.

The rare exceptions:

There are two coppernickel clad 1973-S business strike quality pieces known.

There are about a half dozen 1974-D and 1977-D ikes known in 40% silver.

And you don't have to weight them to tell if they are 40% silver or not. Because of their size, it is very easy to see the copper ring in the clad Ikes. The 40% silver Ikes don't show any copper at all on the edge.

Actually, they do, but the 79.1% copper core is alloyed with 20.9% silver, so it appears grey instead of brown and can blend in with the 80% silver cladding. However, if you look close, you can usually see it.
