Stopped by to see my "gold guy" and he had some nice stuff for me. Picked up this 1843-O half dollar. My first Seated half dollar!

Sadly it is holed but still in decent condition. Check out the die cracks on the reverse.

Would this have any value over melt with the hole?

It does have some premium over melt.
I'd probably bid 16$ for it, and it could probably bring about 20$ on ebay.

Nice coin. I wonder why they holed it at that spot on the coin?

As you feel it has value above the silver it does. This coin does have a distracting issue but it also has some detail characteristics that make it attractive too. The coin is a 170 year old survivor that suffered a traumatic event by one of it's previous owners but it has survived that person to have you as it's custodian. May she never be melted into a blob of metal.
