This came in a lot a few weeks ago.
The first Prutah I have owned.

Trying to figure out, using Sear, if this is from the reign of John Hyrcanus II?

The obverse seems to just have the four Aramaic verses, within the wreath, but no additional "greek letters".
On the reverse, above the Pomegranite, there seems to be a few Aramaic letters.

Weight: 2.24 gm, Diametre: 15.5 mm

Masis

I really know very little about Judean coins. I have one of J.Hyrcanus I that was listed as J.Hyrcanus II when I got it. I find them very tough to distinguish.

Mine is here..https://goccf.com/t/120662&SearchTerms=Judean

A couple more links, if you don't already have them.

Thank you Doucet!

Your Prutah example is great!
Definately from the reign of John Hyrcanus II.

Mine is still a puzzle.

Been trying to figure out the lettering, after finding some examples of the obverse of Prutahs with the letterings highlighted and with the Latin alphabet equivalent to go from, still

We remember that the script is read from right to left.
Line 1)DNY (Yudah?) or HNY (Yonathan?)
Line 2)NHKH (Kohen=Priest)
Line 3)HHHHLDG (Lodg= High?)
Line 4)HD_ (Yudah= The Jews)

So, so far, could rule out Alexander or Mattathias, so either Judah or John.

That odd looking "ribbon bow" above the Pomegranite, may wel be a blundered "A".
So, John Hyrcanus II?

Nope this isn't John Hyranicus II. It's Alexander Jannaeus.

We'd need to have YHWXNN /yehohanan/ at the top for it to be John, but I'm seeing a name that starts with YN) /yana-/

That makes the only possibility YN)Y /yanai/, which is the name found on Alexander Jannaeus' coins.

(Did I mention that my day job is that I translate Aramaic for a living? :-) )

EDIT: The forum software apparently doesn't like Hebrew Unicode. :-P

Thank you so much Steve!

Would this then be "Meshorer 17, BMC 27"?

And then, that "blundered A" as I thought, at the top of the obverse, would it be two Ears of Barley?
