Philip fouree or more sinister?

Cant put my finger on it but the Probus and the Licinius look a bit odd too, thoughts? I'm I too suspicious?

For a fouree they did an excellent job copying from the offical issue. I agree the the
probus looks really odd. The Licinus looks OK to me though.

Could be an experimental attempt by the mint at a silver wash.
Silver could have been in short supply at this time, when the need to issue a greater volume of coinage was needed.
By the time of Gallienus 8 - 10 years later, the silver wash had become very feeble, or even non existant.

I must admit that I don't see anything untoward here at all. You do get surface ahdesions of copper on coins from this period. They would appear to be copper leaching where two (or more) coins have been in contact in the ground. I could be wrong in this case and it could be a fouree but it is hard to tell from the images.

You also get coins from this period where the copper bleeds onto the surface, though this is more common slightly later e.g. Postumus. I have an eastern example from Philip shown below.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the Probus. It is a standard Ticinum issue coin and not one that I have seen faked.... yet.

Martin

Guess I'm getting too suspicious - surface adhesions could explain it, maybe the picture just makes it look like those areas are lowered and sharp, I was under the impression they would be smoother and more 'cloudy'.

Its a rather nice lot if they are indeed all real.

As maridvnvm states, the Philip Antoninianus may be like that due to it being in contact with another coin.
This is often if it is in a hoard, and gets "concreted" by encrusation. If the encrustation is just picked off, you might get this result.
Keep in mind that even the silver content of official Antoninianii were only 40 % by that time.
