I would like to buy a few fake Spanish dollars to have some reference of comparison to genuine coins; however, I don't know what price to bid or whether I will even receive them. I recently bid on a 1739 pillar dollar sold by a "samantha" in Hong Kong, but I stopped bidding at $30 when I saw the price being bidded up by an unknown "private identity." It supposedly sold for $66. Others have sold for $50 - 60. How much should I pay for a fake Spanish dollar and are there any other sources for these coins other than Asia? Thank you.

I understand your desire to study fakes, but as a rule I do not bid on fakes unless they are sold as fakes. No matter how obvious or inexpensive they are. I don't want to take the chance that I will encourage further bidding by less experienced collectors who might conclude that the coin must be ok, since I have placed a bid on it. Also I never want to provide monetary rewards to support the faker in his fraud.

You may find an advanced collector who has a few fake Spanish dollars in their "black cabinet" collection and might sell or give you one. However, many advanced collectors will not sell the fakes they have been burned with over the years -- for fear of them being sold again and more innocent collectors burned.

I would be happy to send you pictures of some, as I have baught a good load of fake ones, ( well I did not know they are fakes), I would have given you some for free, but exporting coins from Yemen is not allowed and will get me into trouble.
