Got a 1896-S quarter incoming this week...
Before buying it, I went to BCCS to check out the diagnostics
Looks very much like a die pair #2.
Too worn to see the die clash in the ear...
So now there's the reed count...

What number should I be getting on a genuine S compared to a P?

I don't have a P quarter myself to compare the reeding, so if anyone can help me out on the reed count for either a P or S, it would be much appreciated.

thanks

It may not be known. Use of reed count as an attribution/authentication tool is still in a relative infancy. On the other hand there may not be any difference in the count. I would like to see more information on reed counts on all series and varieties.

The Barber quarter book only says that the 96-S has a higher reed count than the 1896-P but it doesn't say how much higher, or give any numbers and the entry for 1896 does not give the reed count.

By looking at the Barber coin collector's society (bccs), and see the comparison there between a P and a S, there should be a difference in the reed count. I get the impression that BCCS knows what they are talking about...

Reed-Count-On-1896-S-Vs--P-Quarters?

Some input from ccf member matthewvincent could probably shed some light on the issue...I hope ;)

It would seem that the Mint wasn't too concerned that the size and number of "reeds" on the edge was worth paying much attention to as far as consistency. Could there be different sizes and reed counts for each mint in any given year or did the collars last for years rather than number of strikes like the obverse and reverse dies?

I figured since bccs lists it as a tool to authenticate the 1896-S, the reeds would be consistent and different from the P...

Still hope that someone who owns a 1896-P will do me the huge favor and count the reeds for comparison.

Is it just me or in that picture does the "fine" reeding look coarse and the "coarse" reeding look finer?
