Okay folks, here's a 1950 D Jefferson nickel that I got in my change at the grocery store this afternoon. It's definitely circulated (came out of a cash drawer) but I don't think it's showing all that much circulation wear. I've got 112 different Jeffersons, and every one of them came from pocket change over the past two years, but, frankly, I haven't spent all that much time studying the grading standards for this denomination. Can I get some opinions on what the grade might be for this particular coin? Bear in mind, it's a scan not a photo. It looks much better in hand than in the scan. Thanks. Very nice I would take it if I found it too!! I want to challenge my self so I took a quick look at the pics and I am not pulling out the books. I will SAY Au-55 of course it is hard to tell by photos and scans what the true surface looks like But the Strike on the reverse appears to be better than Average I see some partial steps and I see the Triangle above the the columns fairly well

Yeah scoutjim, I think it's a pretty good find, too. I failed to mention that, under glass and in good lighting, I can see all five steps, and the luster doesn't appear to be impaired - looks like it was taken straight from a roll to the grocery store. Were it not for the fact that I received it in change, I would grade it in the MS category ( ANA Grading Standards).

Is there no one else that would care to give their opinion as to the grade of this coin?

Hard to tell from the pictures there seems to be a corrosion spot. I think based on the pics I would give it an MS 62 assuming the mint luster is still there. It is a better strike than most of this year. If its not corrosion I see then I might go 63.

Yes Richard, there seems to be a little "greenery" growing on the reverse - in front of the E, and below the ME in AMERICA. Minute, but there nonetheless. I think it was a real good find in pocketchange, and I appreciate your call as to the grade. I was thinking MS, but it IS a circulated coin - can't deny that.

Since you noted that you found it in change, I will go with high AU. Taking the green spot into account, I would say AU55. Step/reverse detail is very nice.

, it's just too hard for me to go MS without more photographic evidence of lack of circulation wear...nice find!

I would go at least AU. If you tip the coin back and forth and see the "cartwheel effect" in the luster across the entire coin then I would consider it as mint state. Even if you got the coin in circulation, it doesn't necessarily grade as circulated. The grade assigned to a coin is a consensus of opinion, not a literal term. This is a coin that is actually most often found in unc. condition. One dealer was reported as sitting on 160,000 of them in BU rolls! I have also found that many 1950-D's are well struck and have nice steps. If you look at the MS-65 FS values for this coin they are low compared to many common date nickels. Regardless, this is still a sweet find!

i have been looking at a ton of Jefferson nickels lately and this looks like a nice EF example. I wish my 1950-D was this nice - pulled mine from circulation and it's a well worn VG. my son and I are searching rolls and have yet to find any silver :( -Steve
