This 1845 looks strange, The 4 looks more like a one. Is it just from wear or a variety?

These were purposely altered dates. I've seen a half dozen or so, over the years. Sometimes, 1813 cents were altered. Early collectors would do this so as to complete a date run; 1793-1857 with every year then represented!

Yes, that date looks weird. It doesn't look like it simply wore off, does it? I know sometimes wear can be weird sometimes and sometimes that can be result of strike but this looks like the 4 was changed a little to make a 1. Of course even if this was a 1815 and that year exists, it would not be a braided hair cent.

And believe it or not these altered coins can bring a good price. Take a look at the "1815" cents from the Dan Holmes collection.

Looks like the coin is probably worth more altered than if it had been left alone.

Provenance and the curiosity factor tend to add value to many a coin ...
