My newest addition to my Seated Liberty dimes Set - I'd like to get some opinions on the grade.
There are a few minor tics, and wear from circulation.....and the dark discoloration appears to be a permanent part of the coin, but I think it's still a pleasant looking coin. What do you think?

I like it, but then again it's a gobrecht designed coin! I think it's EF45 to AU55 grade, more on the AU side as there is a lot of detail here, very nice original color look, but it could have been heat treated or stored in a hot area for some time or on a piece of rubber, that is what I think caused the dark streak and the area to left of the date into the rim. Almost looks like a stain or burn mark.

Am I paranoid or does it look like there has been tooling on the side of her head?

I am thinking EF-40, maybe EF-45. Nice coin!

Judging from the rest of the coin, I think you're looking at honest wear on a great original strike. My first impression of it, before even considering a grade, was "wow, what a strike." I think the market would call it EF45.

Very nice dime and quite worthy of being an addition to your set. The reverse on a lot of the Liberty Seated dimes show weakness in the wreath on the reverse and this one is well above average on strike

"About Uncirculated" 45 is too high a grade for me.
This coin would have a VF grade, too much wear on the high points.
Otherwise, a nice coin.
It has not been tooled. Tooling in these cases is most often done to hide wear around the edges of the details. That has not been done in this case.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Y'know, every once in awhile, you run onto a coin that just seems to jump out at you.....this was one of those coins for me - great strike, pleasing eye appeal for the grade, with the added plus of a low mintage figure made this a coin I wanted for my set.
I tend to agree that the coin will fall into the extra fine grade range, and, while it does exhibit a good deal of circulation wear on the high points, I don't believe it will grade below XF-40 - my opinion, of course, but that's what I intend to inventory it as.
Been working on my Seated dimes Set for the past three or four years - tried to go with fine or better, but I've got a few that won't go past very good, and a couple that won't grade above good, but I'm happy with the overall appearance of the set.
This particular coin is the 109th in my set - twelve empty holes left to fill in the Dansco Album, and, given the prices being asked for the coins I don't have, it may take another three or four years (or longer) to finish it but I'm kind of like a little puppy with a very large bone - takes awhile to finish it, but it does get finished.
Again, thank you for your responses - much appreciated.

I agree it's a solid EF-40 with a strong strike, especially on the obverse. Although there appears to be a small scrape above Liberty's forehead the "halo" effect around her head looks to be natural toning, not tooling. The discoloration on the lower left of the obverse looks pretty benign. However, I could see picky PCGS deciding it was evidence of "environmental damage".

The Seated dimes of 1879-1881 are interesting and pretty valuable due to the low mintage. This one is a very nice addition to your set!

Thanks for the comment Jaobler - I've got the 1881 as well; however, it won't grade above very fine - a little lesser grade than this one, but still a pleasant looking coin. The 1879 is most likely the next one I'll attempt to acquire - be awhile though - this one comes right on the tail of the 1856-S and 1858-S I got last month, so my coin collecting "set aside" is a little short on ducats right now.
The ones I'm missing are the 1860-O, 1863, 1864, 1865, 1866, 1867, 1871-CC, 1872-CC, 1873-CC, 1874-CC, 1879, and the 1885-S.....all low mintage, and high price!!

EF40. Sure is a weak strike on the reverse.
