I've been putting together BU pennies for a roll set of lincoln cents. So far I just put any pennies that I think are BU or close in a container to sort through later and keep the best 50 from each year. My question is what exacly is a good keeper for 60's and 70's pennies? Obviously it's easy to find 1990 and up and occasionally you find the 80's in good shape. Can someone post pictures of what they consider a BU 60's or 70's penny. I just want to see if what I'm keeping is what others would consider keeping.
Thanks! Allen

Excellent project. I highly recommend buying a bunch of square tubes and some stickers to put on top. I would also make the rolls on the fly otherwise you're looking a major project. An MS red cent will be pretty obvious, it should have full mint luster and no wear on the high points. If a red coin is somewhat dull and has no cartwheel luster, you can bet it has some wear and it likely AU. Another tip - Once you get the tubes, sort through them once in awhile and put the best coins on the bottom. When you find a real nice coin, swap out one of the lesser top coins and put the new one toward the bottom. I assembled a killer roll set doing that. In fact, I've given up finding better coins for many of the rolls and marked those will a small dot on the top sticker.

Thanks....I guess I'll start putting everthing in tubes now. I'll post a picture of some of my 80's pennies I've saved and see what you think. I guess my problem is when I find a 70's or 80's it doesn't have that glossy mirror finish as a new penny. But it still has a nice color. I just wanted to see if I was doing it "right".

Be nice to yourself and go buy a box of 2500 pennies.

I find a lot of red, older cents but most of them are AU. For me to save ANYTHING in memorial cents I find searching it has to be absolutely mint state with no doubt about it. That is, unless it's an error, variety or otherwise interesting to me.

BadThad: that a lot of weight. Are all those coin tubes filled.
Is it worth while to save multiple tubes. My cut off is 4 rolls. Including one tube

BadThad, that is an awesome roll collection! Now I know what to do with all those MS Zincolns I've been saving.

Ahh.. Thad, I think I see a EF-40 in one of those coins you took out of the roll.

LOL....and those coins are from the top of the roll, where I keep the worst of the bunch.

This is why I don't search pennies often. I have more than enough rolls of nickels and halves. I don't need to add more rolls of pennies. Because I DO have some. LOL

Thanks everyone. I'll just continue as I've been doing and start replacing the lower grade coins with better ones.
What year did S mints become proofs?
Thanks!
