What are your thoughts on this one. I see it as PL. I don't believe the coin is held far enough away from the print to absolutely sure. How far away from print & still read it does the coin have to be considered DMPL? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1885-CC-BU-...:WNA:US:1123

To me the coins looks only Semi Prooflike.
When holding the coin 90 degrees to the paper, you can't make out any words.

I believe it must reflect at least six inches to be DMPL. That is the standard.
Also I believe there is a difference between Proof and DMPL Morgans. I believe DMPL Morgans were struck with business dies for circulation and proof Morgans were struck with the polished proof dies.
Looks to me like it could be DMPL.

Quote: I believe DMPL Morgans were struck with business dies for circulation and proof Morgans were struck with the polished proof dies. You're correct. PL and DMPL coins were minted, after the dies had just been polished. But there was no intent for the coins to be so reflective. Someone mentioned before, that after a die was polished, the first 100 were DMPL, and the 900 after that were PL. (These numbers may be off. Feel free to correct me.)

That coin seems to have a nice mirror and no cartwheeling as you would see in semi PL

Might be MS63PL at best. It sold for the PCGS price guide list for MS63PL but still need to factor in the grading fee, I think it went for about $150 too much IMO.

The reflectivity looks deep enough that I think it would have a good shot at DMPL. Not a big fan of the roller marks or the weak strike. It could grade MS-64 but I think that is probably the best that one can hope for.

I have learned to never buy raw high dollar coins off ebay. There is just so much you can't see in a photo. If the coin was better then a 64 or a DMPL it would be graded already. I would bet it has been graded then removed from the slab at least once if not a few times. I just picked up a nice 85 cc in pcgs ms64 off ebay this week for like $660. I really wanted a 65 but I couldn't swing it right now. After I complete my registry set I plan on upgrading it until its a top 50 set.

To me it looks DMPL. The problem is that reflective properties are tough to judge in photographs. SOme lighting techniques will make a coin look more reflective than it really is.

Very true, I can light a coin, dollars seem to be the easiest, to show or not show scuffs, and light scratches quite easily. Myself, I always try to follow the ANA creed of honesty and integrity when I'm selling coins online. But I've seen some and even bought a few that were obviously doctored up in the photos or lit so they only showed the coin in it's "best" light. I don't let that stop me from buying online or at ebay, - I do only try to buy from known sellers and those with good photos and a fair return policy.

I don't believe this to DMPL. I think if it truly was the seller would post the appropriate pictures to prove it. Thus increasing auction price.

I think if it was DMPL it would be in a PCGS slab.
