Posted this to Moe's 7070 thread but wanted to get your thoughts on this one. Have had it for a few years. Grade, originality, Overton #?

Thanks,
Joe

XF40 was my first thought, but I think the obverse has enough detail to kick it up 5 more points! Nice coin.

A very nice EF-40 grade for me. Sweet obverse off-center strike too!

IMO, this is an Overton-114 (R3).

From Coinzip.com Proboards:

Quote:
Some diagnostics for 1822 O-114 R3:

Obverse: Star 1 points to upper edge of dentil. Star 7 points to upper edge of dentil, and nearly touches the cap.

Reverse: All "E's" are extra large. All "A's" are missing their inner right serifs, their left stands are thin and crooked, and their crossbars are also crooked. Left margin of shield is doubled, and line 1 of stripe 4 extends too far below shield. Right side of "I" is under left side of "T".

Thanks everyone! The dealer I bought it from was sad to see it go and asked me to get an offer from him if I ever decided to sell. However I think this is one that I'm going to be hanging onto for a long time!

Thanks you for the variety attribution Moe!

I can see why. This is a beauty!

Thank you for the variety attribution, Moe!

I'm glad to help! (I think it's a pretty sure attribution. O-114 is a pretty unique die marriage. It had the only usages of obverse die #13 AND the only use of reverse die #M during the 1822 CBH mintage. From my CBH (albeit admittedly limited) knowledge, it's pretty unusual to use one obverse die and one reverse die for just one mintage pair and then discard them both. Usually one die side is still usable after the one side "dies" (pun intended!!)

With the wear on the reverse, I'll stick to VF35.
