I must say I love Double Florins, and I think these are two great buys at £35 each.

Thank you, though a response on at other well known coin forum had me a little worried about the colour of the toning. I hope they don't look as orange in real life....but high grade examples I feel. My peace medal looked tan in the scan but arrived a pleasing dark chocolate brown so colour is often off.

I would imagine just dodgy lighting, if I take pics at a certain time of day all my coins come out looking orange!

Listed in spink2010 for a value of 65 pound (±102 USD or 77 EUR) in EF. Of this year, a variety is known in which the I of Victoria is an inverted 1. These however look to be the normal ones. I consider this a nice buy!

This example sold for £140 by London Coins in 2011 and it has a few edge bruises though not sure how much better this is than my two. I knew about the inverted 1 but not the JEB without top to J.

These coins are often on the market in VF or better condition. One fifth of a Pound.
They were not popular and didn't circulate much.
Compare with the Florin, at the time when the Half Crown was not struck.
Top condition Florins are very difficult to find. By comparison, Double Florins in this condition are easy to find.

marbury518: Your two DF's are quite nice coins, and better than most. They are pleasing coins.
Thirty five pounds each in this condition was a reasonable price to pay.

Thanks sel 691 but then the auction house tries to extract a ridiculous fee for postage....$70 such is the life of a coin collector. I complained and they said if I pay by wire transfer the postage is reduced to $30. So the method of payment affects shipping costs at their end, me thinks not.

Buyer's premiums and shipping costs adds to the bottom line of any acquisition.
To cut costs, my technique for acquiring new acquisitions is a litle different.

Total extra costs: Buyer's premium, and two low cost train trips.

There is a particular auction that I have been dealing with for quite some years now.
The full auction catalogue is available on line for free.

I peruse the catalogue, making a short list of all lots that I may be interested in.
On the view day, I inspect those lots and decide to bid, if interested in them. I like to see ALL of those lots in hand.
I fill in a bid sheet and hand it in. I never attend the auction itself, too boring and time consuming.
A day or two later, the auctioneers telephone me to inform that some bids have been successful.
If successful, I pick up those lots in person, perhaps a week or so after the auction, and always pay in cash.

I am very reticent to bid on ebay, because I can't get a chance to see any item 'in hand' first, before making up my mind to bid.

I don't buy anything on e-bay and buy all over the world, in this case Australia. Most AH's are reasonable on shipping but some clearly seek to make a large profit from shipping and not at cost. Living in the north west on England I'd not get much of interest if I had to travel to inspect coins from the little on offer. I use Sixbid, I-Collector, Coincurcuit and thesalesroom for many purchases.
