Buyer's premiums and shipping costs adds to the bottom line of any acquisition.
To cut costs, my technique for acquiring new acquisitions is a litle different.
Total extra costs: Buyer's premium, and two low cost train trips.
There is a particular auction that I have been dealing with for quite some years now.
The full auction catalogue is available on line for free.
I peruse the catalogue, making a short list of all lots that I may be interested in.
On the view day, I inspect those lots and decide to bid, if interested in them. I like to see ALL of those lots in hand.
I fill in a bid sheet and hand it in. I never attend the auction itself, too boring and time consuming.
A day or two later, the auctioneers telephone me to inform that some bids have been successful.
If successful, I pick up those lots in person, perhaps a week or so after the auction, and always pay in cash.
I am very reticent to bid on
ebay, because I can't get a chance to see any item 'in hand' first, before making up my mind to bid.
