Maybe the Septimius Denarius has been overcleaned, otherwise there is nothing to be concerned about, an interesting selection from different eras of the Roman empire.

Thank you all very much for your expertise. I didn't pay all that much for the coins, and due to my difficulties in identifying them, had begun to assume they were all fakes. I'm glad to hear they appear legitimate.

I paid $200. I have no idea if the coins are worth that or not, but I feel better knowing they aren't worthless fakes. Any idea what the value of the four coins is?

The value of anything is whatever a fool will pay for it. In this case ....... Well I am a 'cheapskate' but I think $20 $25 $30 $10 would be ballpark if I was a buyer. Yes you overpaid. Many people do when they make their first purchase. We all have at sometime done much the same.

Valuing these can be difficult, what sells unidentified with a poor picture on ebay at 4am on a Tuesday morning for $10 can easily cost you $50 from a bricks and mortar dealer the same day. You did pay a little much but you've not been robbed and all the coins are authentic. If you bought from a 'proper' dealer this will go a long way to justifying the price you paid. Welcome to the forum and to ancient coins - stick around, its good fun

Well I did try to emphasize that I am a cheapskate. I am the fool who likes to get up a 4AM. Some nice coins go for 'nice' prices when the other 'boys' are dreaming about other things. If you like them don't think about price. Most coins I own I have little memory of what I paid.

Yes, I'm beginning to understand the difficulty in valuing these items. What I'm starting to wrap my head around is the different values for various versions of the same coin. For someone whose experience with coin "collecting" has been almost strictly in the area of types of bullion, the premise that there can be so many versions of the same coin, often with widely diverging values, is somewhat staggering.
However, I've always had a great fondness for old/ancient items, whether they be fossils or arrowheads or interesting rocks, etc., so I'll definitely be keeping the coins, and quite possibly have found a new hobby.
Thanks, again.

I over paid for some coins when I started, but I'm more shrewd now. After a while you learn to look around the Net and see what similar coins are selling for, so you know the value range for the type and the condition. It's pretty amazing what some folks here on the forum have picked up for a small amount of money. Although, if something you really want comes up, that doesn't come up very often, then reason be damned, you pull the trigger and might over pay a bit.
