So today while sorting through my grandfathers coin collection I paused and started browsing through my dads to see the countries he has visited, etc. Came across this coin that my mother bought in Israel and she stated she paid nearly nothing for it and that I could keep it. She remembers it being from Roman time from what the interpreter said, but this was back in late 1990s. So I just typed in what I read on the coin and pulled up that it is a Denarius, struck 77-78 AD in Rome. So this is NOW the oldest coin in my collection. She purchased it in a 2x2 which was dirty and staples not how I liked it so I just put it in a new 2x2. Details and stock photo: Denarius, struck 77-78 AD in Rome. Obv.: T CAESAR VESPASIANVS, Titus head, laur., r. Rev.: IMP XIII (ex.), sow l., with three piglets RIC² 986 (C); RIC¹ 220; L 227, 228, 229; O; P 203 Picture: Classical Numismatic Group My actual photos(dig. microscope has YET to arrive in mail ) Moved by Forum Mom from Identification forum to Ancient Greek and Roman Coins forum.

A site is selling one of these pretty much worn down with head BARELY visible for $50.
I have no clue how much this is actually worth. Nothing has showed a picture with a actual price range on it. :(

Whew....looks like I need to pay a visit to someone to try and make sure this is a authentic coin.

VCOINS is my 'go to' site for a first step in authentication and visual identification, as well as finding out what the current market is doing for a particular ancient type.
One of the more trusted places from which to buy ancient coins.
Vespasian's denarii often have retrograde legends.
From the picture only, this coin looks OK.
Curiously, one of the first things that I do to authenticate an ancient coin, is to try to bend it in my fingers. To my knowledge, no ancient Greek or Roman coin is made of lead, or has a lead core.

It's a nice coin and appears to be 100% legit.

I was unsure of the cap between the lettering and the bottom left hand corner of the head compared to coins I found online. Tried bending it and nothing.

Generally tourists get 'taken'. Thats what they are there for. Paying almost nothing doesn't mean it is fake. But in Israel the face of Titus just might be recognizable by enough people to be the ideal tourist 'swindle' item. The picture is good but not good enough to determine anything. Very possibly a nice casting.

It looks legit to me from the pics. Having said that, weight, size, and pics out of the plastic & pics of the edges will help:)

When I get the microscope in I will get more pictures, measurements and weight in grains. Kinda irritated that microscope was shipped to Arizona instead of my house. There is no excuse for it... **(No Zip Files Allowed)** s are COMPLETELY different so I am not happy. Friend of the family who kno .s was with her at the time I contacted him to see if he remembers anything.
Also gotta think of the region...this is the middle east its not like the vendors are seeking a fortune in their sales. Just to get by for the day....at the same time it could be a simple new cast.

If it's a casting it's a very good one. From your pictures I don't see anything that would indicate that to me.
