Here is my first Magnentius:) I am pretty sure the die cutter who made the reverse was getting extra wine rations. The "V" in victory is upsidedown and the "E's" are interesting. I cannot figure out the mint on this one (Lyons maybe Trier). Any help and comments would be apreciated.

Magnentius AE Centenionalis. D N MAGNENTIVS P F AVG, draped & cuirassed bust right / VICTORIAE DD NN AVG ET CAES, two victories holding shield inscribed VOT/V/MVL/X

There must be something to it, TJ, the reason for the blundered letters, yes there were probably more Unofficial Issues for Magnentius than Official ones, still...
This is my example, here the "VICTORIAE DD" has become "VICTORIAE ᗡ ᗡ N..."

I agree this has to be an unofficial issue. Nice details, I like it.

A very nice cleanly produced Magnentius (despite the error). Altogether too 'nice' not to be an 'official' issue. I believe hyper inflation and exhausted (and illiterate) mint workers were probably more likely 'culprits' for errors in execution. Having limited resources Magnentius must surely have been more concerned with the quota being met and the troops getting paid, than with any minor 'typos'. I doubt too many of the increasingly 'barbarian' recipients of the bronze coinage even could tell the difference anymore !

I agree the coin that started this thread is an unofficial issue. There are many for Magnentius that are very well done but slightly "off".

Magnentius, 350-353
AE20. 3.72 grams.
VICT DD NN AVG ET CAES
An unofficial, but excellent, copy with all lettering and details correct. Only the portrait style and unlisted control-mark combination indicate it is unofficial.
RIC VII, p. 216, Arles, has PAR of #186 but the control letter A behind the head is on 171ff.

I remember reading a while back about the number of unofficial Magnentius coins being around 50%, incredible and makes them far more interesting to me.
