I've got a good amount of Ike dollars that look like this. Always looked like PMD to me.

It may have been in some sort of bezel for use as jewelry. The bevel would mash down the reeding on the coin when it was tightened onto the coin. Just my guess....

Wouldn't the width of the rim be affected then? It seems like the same thickness as a normal one...

Encasing would have mashed the metal. This coin looks like the ridges never went as wide as normal ridges.
