My wife has inherited a collection of coins and I am looking through them. Some are obvious but there are a lot that I have no idea on even after doing internet research.

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Hello and welcome. I believe we can help.

It's a base-silver soldino (quarter-grosso) from Venice. The winged lion in the bottom pic is the emblem of St Mark, who is named there as patron saint of the city (S.MARCV.VENETI).

In the top pic, we see the doge, or ruler of Venice, standing holding a banner. His name would appear around it; it's hard to read on yours, but I believe it's the Latinized name of Antonio Venier (ruled 1382-1400).

Compare your piece with this one on VCoins.

Thank you so much for your help, I'm sure that you will see a fair bit more of me on here as there are quite a lot of coins/finds in this collection.

Thanks again
