Hello everyone. I'm very much a novice when it comes to coin collecting. I had an older brother that passed away when I was five years old. He was much older than me. Anyway, I ended up with his Great Britain Penny collection. The earliest one is 1878 and there are probably about forty pieces with the latest being 1967. I would like to add to the collection and it has gotten me interested in collecting other coins. I would like to know if any of the current coins I have are of much value so if someone would be willing to inform me as to which years are most rare or of some value I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any help. I'm excited to learn more about the my brothers collection.

Very much depends on condition as with all coins, Victorian coins are pretty abundant in low grade.

Of the later big pennies, 1950 & 1951 are most valuable & 1953 is worth a little. Again only in EF+

You'll have a lot of fun . Watch auctions on ebay too. That'll give a good indication of prices when you see what similarly conditioned coins are selling for.

Welcome to a wonderful hobby. I caught the bug just over a year ago and it is infectious. Look out for subsequent malnutrition of your wallet....

Welcome also to this forum, which as a newbie I have found a mine of information.

Pre 1860 pennies are larger and heavier. It is worth getting hold of one just to compare.

Pennies from 1860 to 1967 are all of a similar design. There are many small varieties in some years.

Rare or valuable years to look for are 1864 1869 1871 1875H ( Heaton mintmark ) 1894 1950 1951. None of these will be particularly valuable.

Two fabled years are 1933 - only 7 known, and 1954 - only 1 known.

Wow, thanks for the information guys. I've been looking on ebay and I was thinking of placeing a bit on a lot of 100 GB pennies dating 1862 and later. It's at 20$ now. I thought it might be a good way to fill in some of the missing years that my brother hadn't collected. He was missing a lot from 1881 to 1901. Again, thanks for the information.
