Hey I just picked up a 1oz canadian locomotive 999 pure silver coin at Canada Post today and noticed when I got home that I was charged Tax on it. Just wondering when I coin is tax exempt...everytime I buy the 20 for 20 online I dont get charged tax....thanks

I would say they made a mistake. Silver coins must be 99.9% pure to qualify for the exemption. That appears to be the case regarding your purchase.

99.5% or purer is tax exempt.

I think it is 99.5% for gold and platinum. 99.9% for silver.

Weird how the system charged the TAX, I mean, the associate cant manually input tax

What about auction houses are they obligated to not charge tax on 99.99% silver bullion?

who ever put the coin in the computer system obviously checked the add tax box. you should go back and get the money they overcharged you. imho.

If one were to buy a 99.99% silver set from a dealer. Does the dealer still apply the GST and HST? I bought a Farewell to the penny set from a US dealer who sent it via UPS who charged the dealer the two taxes. Right or wrong?

Wrong. Should have been exempt from tax.
