I have no experience with these Canons for taking coin pics, but I have been recommending A-series Powershots to friends wanting the "best" in that price range. The A550, frankly, looks to be one of the weaker of this series. It has very little manual control, essentially only White Balance, requiring you to work all the harder to get lighting exactly right. That said, I would expect it to be an excellent performer in Macro mode, like almost all Canons.

Thanks I ask because a friend has one he want's to loan me, I am still looking for a canon s2Is and that is the one I will end up buying. Doing some work on my house right now so the camera will have to wait a few weeks.

Bruce.
Rest in Peace

Beach Camera still lists the 2S IS but the price is now down to $299, may drop further as they try to reduce their inventory in favor of the 3S IS. At some point not too far into the future, the 2S IS will no longer be available. The A550 is $169.

Here's Beach Camera's Canon digicams for comparison shopping:

Bruce, by all means borrow it and play with it. You can expect good pictures, and you'll learn more about lighting and such than you would with a more adjustable camera.
