While going through a box of world and sundry coins I bought last year I found this little coin:

German-Parting-Coin?-|-Prussia-1-Pfennig-1846

German-Parting-Coin?-|-Prussia-1-Pfennig-1846

I know German and so Scheidemünze means like a "parting coin".

Unfortunately I have not found this coin in the Krause world coins, I found similar ones but not exactly this one.
Anyone know which catalog this coin can be found in?

It is very thin, less than 1 mm and diameter of about ~17.5 mm, it weighs 1.36 grams on my scales.

Thanks rooneydog

That was quick! Bookmarked those 2 sites.

Looks like my coin was a bit on a diet in last 150 years:)

I believe Scheidemünze may best translate as "fractional coin;" in this case, one 360th of a Thaler.

philadelphian: It is a fraction of value but as a meaning I read it was made when 2 people were parting ways so they would not have a dispute they had to make these small face value coins of less value than their metal (fraction of some face value).

"Scheide-" means two or more things go away from eacheother/part from eachother. Many words in German are based on that like the English referee is "Schiedsrichter" (so are I think civil judges between 2 parties are also called Schiedsrichter where Richter is judge, the English "divorce" is "Scheidung" hence such a coin was called "Scheidemünze"

Using the term "parting coin" as a translation of "Scheidemünze" is etymologically correct. But I suppose that in 1846 most people did not know about that any more. ;) What was important then was the differentiation between Scheidemünzen and Kurantmünzen. The latter were usually gold or silver coins and, at least in theory, worth the intrinsic value. That would not apply to a Scheidemünze which typically was a low denomination piece made from copper or so. In many legislations, Scheidemünzen had to be accepted up to the value of the smallest Kurant denomination ...

By the way, in German the word "Scheide" has several meanings, two of which have something to do with putting something into something. :)
