Ok.... so I go to the flea market every week and a dealer there has two error coins in his display case.

He has a nice PL 1967 nickel with a 60% or so off-strike. No price.

He also has an unusual 1964 broadstruck quarter, which has a large diameter, and enlarged lettering in the legends. It looks to me like a test strike when setting up the die. No price.

Each and every week I , as diplomatically as possible, ask if he would entertain an offer. Every time it's "I don't think I'm going to sell that one."

I've thrown out some crazy valuations to guage his reaction. I reeeaaly want that 67 nickel for my type set! Not negotiable.

Two questions:

1. What is a reasonable value of these two coins?
2. Has anyone had a similar experience and been successful with a different approach?

It depends how badly you want it and how much you are willing to pay.

Money is the best approach in all cases like this. Let him know you want it and let him see Money, like be holding your wallet with a nice wad in it.

Ask him "IF, you were ever to sell this what do you figure you would let it go for?" then see if he will play ball.

Hi Vance

When someone won't price something it usually means it is not for sale . He merely wants to show it . The best way to go about it is to ask what his "crazy price" would be . Another tack would be to ask him if he is looking for something and maybe a trade would work instead of an outright buy. There are a few off center 67 nickels out there . Several broadstruck quarters in various years are out there . I wouldn't pay the farm for either error .

The nickel would probably top out at $175 - the quarter maybe $100 .IMO . Also the nickel probably isn't a true PL ( that is a whole debate in itself )

I suspect he got them from an old time dealer who doesn't sell at the flea market anymore. This old timer sold me a whole bunch of stuff including a 1967 PL(still in the pliofilm) nickel with a 70 degree rotation.

These do exist and are found in PL sets and the 1967 Black Box Specimen set. I currently have a certified ICCS PL for sale and have sold a complete set on ebay in 2002 for $450.00 US. Hope this helps.

I thought you were talking off center strike not rotated die. For the quarter in this series I find rotated dies often.
