Where to start collecting is my big question at the minute

For some years now I have been developing an interest in collecting Australia $1 coins. 20 of each sounds like me. Starting 2013 is what I have been thinking.

Is this a common type of approach to coin collecting.

Any other suggestions or ideas very welcome.

Great to have another aussie in the family
Good choice, The $1 coins are prolific.
I have 147 different coins in my collection so far and have barely touched the surface.
A very challenging set to get completed.

You probably couldnt have selected a larger Australian series to collect. It will keep you busy for a long time! If it was me id just start buying whatever took my fancy.

I do however think it is a good approach to buy the key dates first up so theyre not hanging over your head. I'm thinking the Victoria Cross and 2000 Mule would be the big two in the $1 coins.

You should probably also decide if you want to collect simply circulating reverses or if you will venture into NCLT. It might be a good idea to start with circulation strikes, then proofs and then into NCLT once youve done the 'basic set'.

The problem with being a collector is this - "you can't have everything"
- so if you don't want to become a hoarder or accumulator,
you have to set yourself goals.
And this is the hard part - you resist the temptation to acquire things outside your target parameters,
so that you conserve your resources, in order to advance your goal.
So, you like Aussie $1 - that's a great goal, and acheivable.
But, you might want to consider the following -
circulation-only, or NCLT as well ?
errors: mules; Cuds; die-cracks; etc ?
grade: Unc or near-Unc only, or lesser grades ?
expense: collect from change or noodling only, so that every $1 in your collection costs you precisely $1 each; or set yourself a maximum bid at auctions ($10 ... $20 ... you choose).

But if you start now, you'll be on top of everything from 2013 forward.

When you've finished the $1, you can start on the 50-cents and 20-cents - I mention them, because of all of the commemoratives.

The really good thing is that you can set your own goals, and the speed of your progress.
Once you have goals, then you can research your topic: reading here on CCF, or magazines, or books.

My other area of collecting is no longer a relaxing pass time. I am up to my neck with an ebay & bidStart stores.

I decided to sell at an auction house all my very expensive items that my climate will not allow me to keep long turn. I can see the start of major environmental damage happening. Another 2 years and I could no longer call them to be in top condition and also it would be the same for an auction house.

In the process of all this I have been watching Australia $1 coins. It would be nice to change the money from one area into coins. I would love to collect coins and nuggets of gold but that is not going to happen.

I like this quote from Peter THOMAS as it sums up my area as I have seen it.

This quote I am not sure about but I think it means driving the bank tellers, shop people and gaming machine workers crazy by asking for heaps of $1 coins looking through them and going back for a new bunch of $1 coins to look at.

And this quote is for as it says, buying at auction.

That is a lot of ways to collect $1 coins. It is so nice to be new at something.
