Why do most clashes/error which boils down to operator error come out of the "O" mint? Especially when back then people took great pride in there work and would be fired over things such as this.

Maybe the machine operators were thinking about getting some of that ole southern poontang instead of focusing on the quality of their work.

I'm guessing that their hearts weren't really in the job. The New Orleans Mint operated in an oppressively hot, humid atmosphere and the vast majority of what they produced (of Morgans) never even entered circulation. Management was appointed for political reasons, and usually changed with the Presidency, so few at the top understood minting.

And consider further that many of the employees were of an age to have fought against the government they now worked for....

I was once told by a knowledgeable person in the field that the New Orleans mint used their dies until they couldn't be used anymore, so clashes and cracks didn't matter until the die fell apart.

It's a reasonable thought. However, the numbers indicate against. Of the 4 mints (not including 1921) producing Morgans, New Orleans received the largest total quantity of dies and die pairs. The Philadelphia Mint significantly exceeded New Orleans' average production per die at 217,000/die to 151,000/die. And if one discounts 1878 when New Orleans didn't produce Morgans, those numbers would be even more divergent.

I can't help but believe that it was all down to inferior craftsmanship on the part of the New Orleans employees.
