I posted this one a while back as part of a thread where I acquired quite a few coins in one go. Someone said it deserved its own thread but I figured I would stumble across my answer... that hasn't happened.

The coin was in the bag with the rest of my purchases when I got home, not sure how it got there (I think because it is so small a dealer didn't notice it in the packet he put my Istros coin in.

Anyway... here are the images... one side appears to be a bulls head, the other could be a portrait where the jaw, mouth and nose are visable...

Photo 1 is taken with the coin placed on a 2 pence piece just so you can see how small it is. It appears to be silver..

I think it was within an incuse square (traces of which remain on the edge of the flan where it isn't worn away... and there are many archaic types containing bulls heads but not with quite the same aspect as this one.

I didn't see anything similar to it yet on Vcoins... I am hoping someone has some good books on Greek types and can look it up, or can recognise it from a vast experience in coins.

The denomination is certainly something like obol or hemi-obol, but that doesn't really narrow down where it is from. This list is from an essay explaining the Greek monetary system and gives a good idea of the weights of the different denominations.

I must agree Doug is a mine of useful information, I have looked up Roman stuff there in the past, he doesn't have this on his site though.

Stylistically the closest bulls head I have been able to find is on a Euboian league drachm...

Sicily - Gela. Ca 490-470 BC.
Would need a weight to confirm denomination but it looks to be the size of a tetartemorion. I can see what looks like the top of the A from Î"ΕΛÎ' poking up under the forepart of the man headed bull.
