Well, after this many smackdowns, it's hard to come up with fresh topics. I almost went with..."just show us anthing you haven't posted yet". So we'll do "Island of Misfit Coins". Rember the old Rudolf Christmas speical with all the toys that were' quite right? Here we'll showcase our "misfits". Coins that we haven't been able to attribute, or we don't know were to put in our collection (have 99 romans but 1 greek coin or can't decide were to "stick it"), whatever you consider it to be a nonconformist with your coin collection...or in the periphery of your collection. If it is a coin that has never been posted here, you get +1 point...please mention this in your post. If you've never participated in smackdown, +1 point...also, please mention in you post. Posting is open until Friday 11:00 pm GMT (6:00 U.S. Eastern time). Max two post per person. Edited by chrsmat71 02/17/2013 11:21 pm

here's my example posts... this thing is a byzantine coin, I think it is a justinian i, but not sure. in pretty rough shape, got him in an uncleaned group and tried to fix it up as best I could. I didn't want it, tried to sell it on ebay...nobody would touch it. so I guess i'll keep it until I can find it a home. this coin has never been posted on this forum, so it would get +1 point! this thing has been sitting on my desk for 2 months. got it in an uncleaned lot. it's some type of gallienus zoo coin, obverse is horrible but a kind of neat antelope on the reverse. not quite cull bag, not quite collection for me. I've got a friend who is into roman goddesses, I think these were dedicated to diana, i'll probably give it to her. this coin would also get +1 point for never being posted.

I am looking, hoping I can help with something. I thought Gil-galads second coin might be Lydia Sardeis, head of Apollo/Herekles club but its not quite close enough (it looks like its completely plain around the club on Gil-galads coin...most I look at either have something with the club or a wreath around it)
If not one identifies my silver coin which has its own thread maybe that will join, its my only ancient misfit. I am hoping someone can solve that one though...

Not many 'misfits' left in my collection excepting my Caligula "Mule". Closest thing I have is this Aurelian bronze. Part of his futile attempt to roll back the economic decline and restore a golden age. Doesn't really look right surrounded by late 3rd Cent. Antoniniani and frequently gets moved from one box to another. Aurelian AE As Obv. Laureate and cuirassed bust of Aureian right IMP AVRELIANVS AVG Rv. Aurelian in military dress clasping hands with Severina head of Sol above. CONCORDIA AVG no officina mark in exergue SEAR 11646 C.35 6.27 grams 23-25mm

Looks like this could be an interesting Smackdown. Like the fact a lot of IDs are coming out. I was going to 'suggest a long term difficult attribution' thread a while back, at this rate we might not need one.
