This is not a coin. It is a coin based medalette. I have seen similar, illustrated in a book, Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Gold and Silver Coins', by Lin Gwo Ming, publ. by Taisei Stamps & Coins (HK) Ltd.

rooneydog: You could well be right, and I have contributed somewhat to my own embarrassment. I was a little too lazy to look more closely.
There are six other varieties of tael illustrated in the book that I have. The four common varieties range in value in EF from $45 to $70. The two rare varieties illustrated have a value of $1,200 in EF.
My book has a major problem, however. The character between the flag sticks at the bottom of the reverse is not illustrated, so my book cannot reveal whether merima_tz's (at least) 7th variety has a high or low value.

Anything from China has got to be FAKE ! I'm just being cynical, so don't take me seriously. I'm 50 yrs old and obviously very jaded, just starting to really get verbal about it though. I think it has to do with all of the fake stuff coming from there making my life harder than it has to be. When I see an authentic Chinese silver panda coin, I swear it's laughing at me.

The six illustrations in my book are listed under Singkiang province for Republic of China - ration silver, dated 1912 to 1916.

I want to be optimistic for you but I am cynical as well. I don't like the look of the second coin. I'm also uncomfortable with the corrosion on coin 1. Many of our members can ID fakes on site simply because the characters on the coins are incorrect for the time and place. I am not one of those people. Step 1: See if they stick to a magnet. If they are magnetic, they are fake, end of story. Step 2: Get an accurate weight and diameter and share them here. If you don't have scale, take them to a jewelry store or buy a scale for $20 online. When dealing with potentially valuable coins, there's no excuse for not getting an accurate weight. Honestly I think they're fake, so I'd ask the people offering $480 to "show me the money" to see how serious they are.
