I agree with 54dollarcoin.
Given the apparent wear(weakness)of the obverse, the occupants of the canoe should show some flattening.
The HB is exceptionaly weak or missing.
The front of the rear bundle has an unusual shape.

Something looks off about it to me as well.

Go find some ICCS graded pictures to compare to and you'll notice a number of differences on certain letters and numbers.

I am going to say not authentic.

Hi everyone,

Hope all's going well with you and yours... :)

I really must be missing something here...

I've wasted more time than I'd like to admit examining photos of Wild's coin... and compared it with my own coins in hand... and with pics of ICCS coins...

I can't find anything even close to being a variation...

Here's reverse of Wild's and ICCS coin... where are the differences...?

In my opinion Wild's coin is authentic... reverse is a solid AU-50... unfortunately the obverse side has considerable wear... probably slid around in the bottom of a drawer for years causing details to be worn down...

More evident on the obverse legend. Shape of the O in GEORGE. General "boldness" of the letters on the OP coin vs an authentic piece. Some of the letters seem to have a slight wave to them, such as the V in VI.

edit: Also just the overall color and lack of fine detail even. Similar but not due to to a weak strike. As another pointed out, the high points on the reverse don't show weakness.

cameron93 - look at the front of the rear bundle on your coin and where I outlined in red on the OP's coin, there is clearly a difference.

The harder I look at the OP coin the more I am convinced it is a counterfeit. Still would like to see better pics and a weight from the OP. Also is the coin slightly rotated? If it is that would be a dead give away for a Lebanese counterfeit. The 45 and 48 fakes are approx 5 degrees off and look mushy like the obverse of the OP coin. Give us a reeded edge photo as well.

the font is strange in the "ADA" of Canada seems to think also the "R" of Rex has the same strange...offness? of course this could be attributed to years of wear. Only sure way to know is to have it graded.

Wow thanks for all the advice everyone! My parents are leaving for a months vacation this weekend, so I'll see if I can get them to check for rotation and to take a reeded edge photo before they go. I'll also suggest that he get it graded when he gets a chance.

Thanks again!
